Protecting Your Investment — One Project at a Time.
👋 GOOD MORNING, NORTHERN COLORADO!
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Grab your coffee, and let's get to this week's Punchlist!
As October comes to an end, it's a great time to tackle a few of those small household projects that are easy to put off.
This week, we're checking an important home safety feature, looking at a hidden energy waster, and tackling something that could save you from a plumbing emergency.
Plus, we've got some Halloween happenings around Northern Colorado!
Let's get started.
🔨 1 PROJECT
🚨 The 15-Minute Home Safety Check
When was the last time you tested your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?
Most homeowners walk past these devices every day without giving them a second thought.
But when you need them, you REALLY need them!
Your Weekend Punchlist:
☐ Test smoke alarms: Press the test button on each alarm according to the manufacturer's instructions.
☐ Check carbon monoxide alarms: Make sure they're working and haven't reached their replacement date.
☐ Check expiration dates: Smoke alarms generally need replacement 10 years after manufacture. CO alarm lifespans vary by model.
☐ Inspect alarm locations: Make sure alarms are installed in the required locations and aren't blocked.
☐ Review your escape plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows how to get out safely during an emergency.
💡 PUNCHLIST TIP: Don't assume an alarm is working just because its indicator light is on. Test alarms regularly and replace them according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
⏱️ Time: 15–20 minutes
💰 Cost: FREE if everything is working
🔧 Difficulty: Easy
DIY or Call a Pro?
Testing alarms is an easy DIY task. If hardwired alarms need electrical repairs, contact a qualified electrician.
The Bottom Line: Fifteen minutes of prevention could make all the difference in an emergency.
👀 1 THING TO CHECK
🧊 Your Refrigerator Condenser Coils
Here's something most homeowners never think about.
Your refrigerator works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
But dust, pet hair, and debris can accumulate around its condenser coils, making it harder for the appliance to release heat.
That can reduce efficiency and put additional strain on the system.
Your Quick Inspection:
Locate the condenser coils using your refrigerator's owner's manual.
Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning.
Remove accessible dust using a soft brush or vacuum attachment.
Make sure ventilation openings aren't blocked.
Reconnect the refrigerator when finished.
💡 PUNCHLIST TIP: Not all refrigerators have accessible coils that require cleaning. Check your manufacturer's instructions before removing panels.
A little cleaning today could help your refrigerator run more efficiently tomorrow.
⚠️ 1 THING YOU'RE PROBABLY OVERLOOKING
🚰 Do Your Water Shutoff Valves Actually Work?
Imagine discovering a leaking toilet or broken faucet supply line.
You reach under the sink to shut off the water, only to discover the valve is stuck!
Unfortunately, many homeowners don't find out their shutoff valves have failed until there's already a problem.
Here's what to check:
Locate the shutoff valves under sinks and behind toilets.
Look for corrosion, moisture, or visible leaks.
Make sure you know where your home's main water shutoff is located.
Check whether valves are accessible and clearly identifiable.
💡 PUNCHLIST TIP: Don't force a stuck or corroded valve. If you're unsure whether it operates properly, have a plumber inspect it.
The Bottom Line: Knowing how to shut off your water quickly can help prevent a small plumbing problem from becoming a major repair.
💰 NUMBERS THAT MATTER
🔟 YEARS
That's the general replacement interval for smoke alarms, even if they still appear to work.
Over time, smoke alarm sensors can become less reliable.
Check the manufacture date on the back of your alarms this weekend.
The takeaway: A working smoke alarm is one of the simplest and most important safety investments in your home.
